## Where the money sits in a grade ladder

A grade ladder is the price of the same card at each grade, and the useful question about it is not how much grading
adds. It is where the addition happens. Two cards can both be worth roughly nine or fifteen times raw at the top and
be completely different propositions, because one of them pays something at every rung and the other pays nothing
until the last one.

The calculator reports that as the step: what the market pays to move up one notch. On the modern example loaded above,
the step from 9 to 9.5 is $90.00 and the step from
9.5 to 10 is $440 — one half-grade apart, and one of
them is 4.9 times the other. On the vintage example, the four
steps are $400, $450, $950, $600, which is a ladder you can climb rather than a cliff you
have to clear.

The multiple over raw cannot show you this. It only ever rises, so every ladder looks like a success story when it is
written as 1.1×, 1.4×, 2.3×, 4.5×, 15.5×. The steps between those multiples are where the information is, and the
largest of them is what the calculator calls the value grade.

## Is this card a lottery ticket or a business?

A card whose premium is concentrated in the top grade is a lottery ticket, and it should be priced like one. The
modern example carries 76% of its whole raw-to-top climb in the final step, so a submission
that comes back one notch low keeps 24% of the upside and loses the rest. Whether that is
worth doing depends on how often the card actually reaches the top grade, which is a population question rather than a

A card whose nine already carries a premium is a business. The vintage example is worth
7.0× raw at the nine, so the submission pays even when the card does not reach
the top of the scale, and the outcome you were hoping for is an improvement rather than the whole thesis. Those two
ladders call for opposite behaviour: the first says submit only cards you have inspected hard and expect to gem, the
second says submit anything clean.

## Reading your own ladder

A bar that is one long block at the right is a modern-shaped ladder: authentication is worth nothing, condition is
worth nothing until it is perfect, and the money is a scarcity premium on the top grade. Cards printed in enormous
quantities behave this way, which is why a junk-wax common in a nine is worth the plastic and the same card in a ten
is worth looking up.

A bar cut into four comparable blocks is a vintage-shaped ladder: every grade is genuinely scarcer than the one below
it, so every step is paid for. On cards that old the top grade may not exist in any quantity at all, and the market
prices the eight and the nine accordingly. If your own ladder comes out looking like the second bar, the submission

you are not chasing one specific outcome.

## What does a near miss cost?

One rung. That is the difference between the two examples, and it is worth more than every other number on this page.
A card that stops one rung short of the top keeps 24% of its available premium on the
modern card and 75% on the vintage card.

## Filling the ladder in

1. **Get the raw price first, from sold listings.** Everything on this page is a multiple of it, so an optimistic raw price flattens the whole ladder and hides the step you are looking for.
2. **Search one grade at a time.** A search that returns a mix of grades produces a median that describes no grade. The [value calculator](https://sportscardradar.com/tools/card-value-calculator/) takes each set of comps and prints the middle plus an honest range.
3. **Keep one company per run.** PSA grades 1 to 10, half grades from 1.5 to 8.5, so a PSA ladder has no 9.5 row at all; BGS grades 1 to 10 in half steps, with four subgrades. Mixing them puts two different products in one column.
4. **Leave a grade blank rather than guessing it.** A guessed rung changes which step is largest, which is the one output of this tool that decides anything.
5. **Check how many sales each rung is built on.** A top-grade price supported by one sale is a story. Two sales is a coincidence. The premium you are about to spend a fee chasing should rest on more than that.

## What the shape changes about the submission

The shape decides three things. Whether to submit at all: a top-heavy ladder is only worth entering when the card
has a real chance at the top grade, which is what the [expected-value calculator](https://sportscardradar.com/tools/grading-worth-it-calculator/) works out once you supply the probabilities. How many cards to send: a broad ladder pays on
ordinary results, so batching is cheap and sensible, while a top-heavy ladder rewards sending fewer and better
cards.

And which company. Where the premium sits in one company’s top grade, that company is the submission, because the
same card in another holder is priced against a different ladder entirely — that is what the

one. Run the ladder twice, once per company, and the difference between the two top rungs is the value of the

Both ladders are worked examples, not market prices: no card is named because naming one would mean quoting a number
that moves. The highlighted row in each is the value grade — the largest step between two graded rungs, which is what
the calculator finds in whatever you type in. Grading company scales read on 2026-09-11.

## The same two cards, side by side

Put the two tables next to each other and the contrast is in one column. The modern card’s steps run
$5.00, $10.00, $35.00, $90.00, $440; the vintage card’s run
$400, $450, $950, $600. The first is a sequence of rounding errors followed by a
cliff. The second is four payments of roughly comparable size, which is what it looks like when a grade is being priced
as condition rather than as a jackpot.

Notice also what the multiples do not tell you. At the nine, the modern card is 2.25×
raw and the vintage card is 7.00× raw — both are positive, both look like grading
worked. Only the step column shows that one of them has captured 75% of its available premium at that point and the other has captured 9%.

## What the multiple does not tell you

- **It is not a probability.** A ten worth fifteen times raw is only worth chasing at the rate the card actually gems, and that rate comes from the population report, not from the price.
- **It is not net.** The prices you entered are gross. Subtract the [all-in submission cost](https://sportscardradar.com/tools/grading-cost-calculator/) and the selling fee before deciding anything, because on a card of this size both are large fractions of the step.
- **It is not stable.** Top-grade premiums move with the population: every new ten printed makes the existing tens slightly less scarce, and a card with a small pop and a big premium is the card most likely to see both change.
- **It is not transferable between cards.** A multiplier learned on one card tells you nothing about the next one, which is the whole reason this tool has input fields instead of a table of typical premiums.

## Bottom line

A grade premium is worth reading as a ladder rather than as a single multiplier, because the step between two
consecutive grades is where the market shows what it is paying for. In the worked examples on this page one card puts
76% of its entire raw-to-top premium into the final half-grade step, making the
submission a bet on one outcome, while the other spreads its climb across four comparable steps and pays on ordinary
results. Find your own biggest step before you decide anything: it tells you whether to submit, how many to send, which
company to send them to, and what a near miss actually costs. Grading company scales cited here were read on

## Questions this tool gets asked

How much more is a graded card worth than a raw one?

It depends entirely on the card and on the grade, which is why this tool asks you for the prices rather than printing a multiplier. The pattern worth knowing is that the premium is almost never spread evenly: in the worked examples on this page, one card carries 76% of its whole raw-to-top premium in the final half-grade step, while the other has 58% of its climb banked by the nine. Two cards, the same question, opposite answers.

What is the value grade on a card?

It is the grade where the largest single jump in price happens — the step the market is actually paying for. The calculator finds it by comparing consecutive graded prices rather than by comparing each grade with raw, because the jump out of raw is mostly the fact of authentication and is not the question you are deciding. Knowing the value grade tells you what a submission is really betting on, and whether missing it by half a point costs you a little or almost everything.

Why does my card show no premium at a 7 or an 8?

Because a mid-grade slab on a modern card is usually worth about what the raw card is worth, plus the cost of the plastic. Grading adds authentication and a condition guarantee, and on a card printed in the millions neither of those is scarce. The premium appears only where the grade itself is hard to achieve, which is why the ladder on a modern card is flat at the bottom and vertical at the top, and why the population report matters more than the price guide.

Should I use PSA 10 prices or BGS 9.5 prices?

Use both, in separate runs, because they are different products with different buyers. PSA publishes a scale of 1 to 10, half grades from 1.5 to 8.5, so there is no PSA 9.5 to enter at all; BGS runs 1 to 10 in half steps, with four subgrades, and its 9.5 is the grade most modern premiums are quoted against. Fill the ladder for one company at a time and compare the two results, rather than mixing a 10 from one with a 9.5 from the other in the same column.

Where do I get prices for each grade?

From completed sold listings, filtered one grade at a time, and from auction archives for anything above four figures. Search the card plus the grade, take at least six sales per grade, and use the median rather than the highest. The card value calculator on this site does that part, including flagging the sales that are not actually your card. A ladder built from asking prices will show a premium that nobody has ever paid.

Does a big top-grade premium mean I should submit?

Not on its own, and this is where most submissions go wrong. A large premium at the top grade is only worth chasing if the card has a real chance of reaching it, and that probability comes from the population report and from the condition of the card in your hand. A ten that is worth fifteen times raw and lands one time in forty is a worse bet than a nine worth three times raw that lands one time in three. The expected-value calculator combines the two.

Why compare the step between grades instead of the multiple over raw?

Because the multiple over raw grows at every grade and therefore tells you nothing about where the money is created. The step does: it isolates what the market pays to move up one notch. A ladder where every step is similar means the grade is being priced as condition, which is normal for vintage. A ladder where one step is most of the climb means the grade is being priced as scarcity, which is normal for modern cards and is a very different bet.

Are the numbers in the examples real prices?

No, and deliberately so. They are two shapes chosen to show the difference between a top-heavy ladder and a broad one, and no card is named because naming one would mean quoting a price that moves. Every figure on this page is either something you typed into the calculator or something computed from those two example arrays. Put your own comps in and the page becomes about your card.
