## A /99 card is 99 objects in the world, not one in 99 packs

The number after the slash counts cards, not packs. A card stamped 12/99 is one of exactly ninety-nine physical objects
that will ever exist with that design, that player and that parallel, and the count was fixed on the day the sheet was
cut. No later printing adds to it. That is the whole meaning of the number, and it is a statement about supply.

Pack odds are a different quantity in different units. They tell you how often a card appears per pack opened, which
depends on how many packs the manufacturer made — a figure nobody publishes. If two million packs of a product were
printed and a parallel is numbered to ninety-nine, that parallel turns up roughly once every twenty thousand packs, not
once every ninety-nine. Reading a print run as pack odds understates the difficulty by a factor of several hundred, and
it is the mistake behind most of the disappointed forum posts about a product being “easy”.

The reverse mistake costs more. Reading pack odds as a print run — “it is 1 in 99, so there must be about ninety-nine of
them” — has no basis at all, because a 1-in-99 insert in a product with a large print run can exist in the tens of

## So is a modern /25 rarer than an unnumbered insert from the 1990s?

Often it is not. Serial numbering only became standard after print runs had already been cut, and the era table behind
this site records what happened in the years between. Of the insert and parallel era,
1995 to 2000, it says: “Print runs collapsed after the 1994 strike and manufacturers moved value into inserts. Base cards are still worth little; the inserts from these years are genuinely scarce and were never collected in bulk.” — and of what carries value from those
years, “Serial-numbered inserts, refractors and the first parallel ladders. Some 1990s inserts are rarer than modern /25 cards and trade for less.”. Both were read on 2026-09-11.

The reason a proven twenty-five beats an unproven two hundred is information rather than physics. A stamped number is
evidence a buyer can hold in their hand, and evidence is what a market prices. An insert that was genuinely printed in
the hundreds carries no evidence of it, so the buyer has to take a forum consensus on trust, and most buyers will not
pay for a claim they cannot check. That asymmetry is a permanent feature of this hobby and it is worth using
deliberately: undocumented scarcity is where the value that has not been competed away tends to sit.

It cuts the other way too. A serial number is proof of supply and proof of nothing else. The modern era has
produced enormous numbers of low-numbered parallels of players the market never adopted, and those cards are scarce and
cheap at the same time without any contradiction. Before treating a small number as a valuation, run the sold prices

The tier labels are a description of supply and carry no claim about price. The last column assumes a 100-card
checklist, which is the figure the calculator uses when you leave the set size at its default; change it and the

## What the tiers in that table are for

The tier is a shorthand for how a print run behaves in a market, and the useful boundary is not where people expect.
Between a limited parallel in the hundreds and a scarce one under a hundred, the behaviour that changes is availability:
above a hundred copies there is usually one for sale somewhere, and below it there often is not. That is why the
hundred-copy line, rather than any particular number, is where the waiting starts.

Below twenty-five, the market stops having a price and starts having a queue. Ten copies of a card collected by
thousands of people means the next sale sets the price and the one after it sets a different one, so a median computed
from three sales across two years is a historical note rather than a valuation. At that level the honest description is
a range with the sample size attached, which is what the value calculator prints when you give it too few comps.

A one of one sits outside the ladder entirely. There is no comparable sale of the same card because there is no same
card, so pricing falls back to the next-best parallel plus whatever premium uniqueness commands for that player. The
largest error people make here is assuming every 1/1 is the top of its own ladder — printing-plate cards are unique by
construction and there are four of them per card, one per colour plate, which is four unique cards of the same player
from the same set.

## The serial numbers that carry a premium, and the one the tool cannot see

Four kinds of serial number attract an extra bid. Copy 1 goes first, because it is the one everybody can name.
The final copy — 99/99, 25/25 — goes for similar reasons and is usually slightly cheaper. Round numbers draw a
smaller premium; the calculator flags 10, 25, 50 and 100 when they fall inside the run. And a number matching the
player's shirt number is the one that moves the most on the right player, because there is exactly one of them in
the whole run and jersey-number collectors compete for it specifically.

That last check is not something the card announces and it is not in the shared arithmetic engine behind these
tools, so this page adds it: the shirt-number field exists purely to test whether your copy number matches, and the
answer is only as good as the number you type. It is worth getting right. A jersey match turns an interchangeable
middle copy into the single copy a specific group of buyers wants, and it is invisible to anyone searching by print
run alone.

How large any of these premiums runs is a question for sold comps rather than for a rule of thumb. It scales with
how many people collect the player, not with how small the print run is, and on a card nobody chases all four
premiums are zero. Every other copy in the run is interchangeable, which is the honest and slightly deflating
conclusion: in a /99 parallel, roughly ninety-three of the ninety-nine copies are the same card at the same price.

## Completing the parallel is a different question from finding the card

A print run counts copies of one card. A set builder needs one copy of every card in the checklist, which is a much
larger number of objects.

Read the last column. However long the checklist, at most 99 complete sets of a /99 parallel can exist,
because the scarcest thing in the project is the number of copies of any single card. The

## Reading a serial-numbered card, in order

1. **Read the denominator first.** It is the only number on the card that describes the world rather than your copy, and everything else on this page follows from it.
2. **Find out whether the parallel has a name.** Colour parallels sit in a ladder, and the same player in the same set can exist at /199, /99, /25, /10 and 1/1 simultaneously. Knowing which rung you are on tells you which sold prices are comparable and which are not.

4. **Check your copy number against the chase list.** First, last, round, jersey. Six numbers out of ninety-nine, and the other ninety-three are worth the same as each other.
5. **Then go and read sold prices for that exact parallel.** Not the base card, not the next rung up. Print run sets the ceiling on how many people can own it; only the comps tell you how many want to.

A card numbered /99 exists in ninety-nine copies worldwide, and that is a supply fact rather than a probability: it
does not mean one pack in ninety-nine, and the two figures are not convertible into each other without the print run of
the product, which is not published. One copy is 1.01% of the run, and the same
parallel across a 100-card checklist is 9,900 cards in total. Copy 1, the last copy, the round numbers and a
number matching the player's shirt draw an extra bid; the rest of the run is interchangeable. And scarcity on its own
is not value — a proven twenty-five copies of a player nobody collects is worth less than an undocumented 1990s insert
that four thousand people want, which is why the serial number tells you the ceiling and only the sold prices tell you
the price.

What does /99 mean on a sports card?

It means the manufacturer printed ninety-nine copies of that exact card and stamped each one with its own number, from 1/99 to 99/99. The number after the slash is the print run: the total population of that card in the world, fixed at the factory and never added to. The number before the slash identifies which of the ninety-nine you are holding. It is a statement about supply, and it has nothing to do with how many packs you have to open to find one.

Is a /99 card one in ninety-nine packs?

No, and this is the most expensive misreading in modern collecting. A /99 card is ninety-nine objects in existence. How often it appears in packs depends on how many packs of that product were printed, which is a completely separate and usually unpublished number. If the manufacturer made two million packs, a /99 parallel turns up roughly once in twenty thousand of them, not once in ninety-nine. Print run is supply; pack odds are probability; the two are measured in different units.

Which serial numbers are worth more?

Copy number 1 and the final copy carry a persistent extra bid, a number matching the player's shirt number carries another, and round numbers like 10, 25 and 50 carry a smaller one. How large any of those premiums is varies enormously by player, by product and by who happens to be collecting that player's jersey-numbered cards that month, so the honest answer is to look at sold copies of that specific card rather than to apply a multiplier. What is reliably true is the direction: the middle numbers are the ones the market treats as interchangeable.

How many cards exist across a whole parallel set?

Multiply the print run by the number of cards in the set. A /99 parallel of a 100-card set is 9,900 individual cards, which sounds like a lot until you remember that each specific card is still only ninety-nine copies. That distinction decides whether a parallel is hard to complete as a set or hard to find as a single card, and it is why set builders and player collectors argue past each other about the same product.

Is a modern /25 rarer than an unnumbered 1990s insert?

Frequently not. Print runs were not disclosed before the serial-numbering convention took hold, and insert and parallel era production, from 1995 to 2000, put real scarcity into inserts that carry no number at all. Some of those cards exist in the low hundreds and trade for a fraction of a modern /25, because a stamped number is a marketing signal the market can see and an undocumented print run is not. Scarcity you can prove is priced; scarcity you cannot prove is not.

Does a 1/1 mean there is only one card?

It means only one copy of that exact card exists — that parallel, that player, that design. It does not mean the image or the photograph is unique, because the same picture usually appears on the base card and on every parallel above it. It also does not mean the card is the most valuable version: a printing-plate 1/1 and a colour-parallel 1/1 are both unique and are priced very differently, because uniqueness sets a floor on supply and says nothing at all about demand.

Why do some scarce cards sell for so little?

Because scarcity without demand is just a small number. A /10 parallel of a player nobody collects has ten copies and perhaps two people who want one, and the price is set by the second of them. The print run tells you the maximum number of people who can own the card; it cannot tell you how many want to. That is why every rarity figure on this page is paired with a note to go and read the sold prices before deciding what the number is worth.

Where does this tool get its numbers from?

From the number printed on your card and nothing else. The print run, the share of the run and the parallel-set total are arithmetic on the figures you type, computed in your browser with no request to any server.
