Those five are the whole of storage practice that has a mechanism behind it. Everything else sold as card care is a matter of taste or of display, and the calculator above prices only the parts that do something.
Why the sleeve goes on before the toploader
A soft sleeve goes on first because the toploader is harder than the card. Rigid holders are made of PVC or polypropylene with a surface hardness well above the card’s printed coating, so a card loaded straight into one picks up fine scratches down the face every time it slides in or out. The sleeve is a sacrificial layer: it takes the friction, it costs a fraction of a cent, and it is replaced when it gets scuffed.
Surface is one of the four things a grading company assesses, and it is the one that is judged under angled light, where fine scratching is exactly what shows. That is the whole argument. A card that would have graded well can be talked down a grade by damage that happened in the storage meant to protect it, and the sequence of two pieces of plastic is what decides which.
There is a second-order benefit that matters when you sell. A sleeved card slides into a toploader without force, so the corner does not catch on the lip, and corner damage on loading is the other common self-inflicted loss. If a card needs pressure to go in, the toploader is the wrong size and the answer is a different toploader rather than a firmer push.
What does protecting everything properly actually cost?
Two things follow from the shape of those lines. The first is that sleeves and boxes are nearly free: the whole cost of protecting a thousand cards at the base level is less than the price of one modest card, so there is no honest argument for leaving a collection loose in a shoebox. The second is that the rigid tier has no volume discount in it. Every additional card in a toploader costs the same as the last one, which means the total scales exactly with how many cards you decide deserve it.
That makes the share the only real decision on this page, and it is a decision about the collection rather than about the supplies. The question is not how much protection is good in the abstract; it is how many cards in this box would be worth less if they picked up a scratch. On most collections the honest answer is a small number, and the calculator exists to show what the difference between a small number and a reflex costs.
Does a bigger collection cost less per card to protect?
A little, and not for the reason people expect. The prices do not fall with volume — the calculator has no bulk tier in it — but sleeves are sold in hundreds and a box holds several hundred cards, so a small collection pays for capacity it does not use. Hold the protection share still and move only the size, and the per-card cost comes out as a staircase.

Order in one delivery where you can — postage on four packets bought separately is frequently larger than the difference between any two rows of this table, and it is the one cost the calculator does not carry.
Three thousand commons, and the supplies cost more than the cards
Take a 3,000-card box of commons from a high-supply era. Sleeved and boxed at the starting prices it needs 30 packs of sleeves and 4 boxes, and it comes to $57.00, or $0.019 a card. Put the same 3,000 cards into toploaders and the bill is $645.
Now price the contents. A common card from an over-produced year is worth less than the sleeve it is in, which is the finding the era checker states plainly for every year it covers. So the toploader version of that box spends several hundred dollars protecting cardboard with no market, and even the sleeved version spends more than the cards would fetch if somebody took them away today.
This is not an argument for storing cards badly. It is an argument for sorting first. Pull the cards that have a reason to be protected — the rookies, the graded candidates, anything you would replace if it were lost — protect those properly, and let the rest live in sleeves and boxes at two cents a card. The alternative is a collection where the protection budget went to the part of it that has no value.
Humidity moves cardboard, and the swing does the damage
Cardboard absorbs and releases moisture with the air around it, and it changes dimension slightly when it does. A card held at a steady middling humidity for a decade is stable. A card that cycles — damp in winter, dry in summer, or damp at night and dry in the afternoon — expands and contracts unevenly across its layers, and the result is the gentle bow or the wave along one edge that is so common on cards stored in lofts and garages.
That is why the useful instruction is stable rather than low. A dehumidified room that swings hard when the machine cycles is worse than an ordinary interior cupboard that sits where it is all year. Temperature matters mainly through its effect on humidity and on adhesives, so a heated interior room is the practical answer for almost everybody, and it costs nothing.
Light is the other irreversible one. Fading cannot be undone, cannot be argued with by a grader, and happens to displayed cards over a few years rather than over decades. If a card is on a wall in daylight, it is being spent. A magnetic holder with UV resistance slows that down; it does not stop it, and the honest way to display a card you care about is a scan on the wall and the card in the cupboard.

Which of the four price fields is worth getting right
All four are editable and only two of them move the bill. The table below doubles one price at a time and leaves the other three alone, on the 1,000-card example the panel opens with.

Doubling the top row costs 6 times what doubling the bottom row does, on a collection where only 2% of the cards are in a magnetic holder at all. The rigid tier is where comparison shopping pays; the box is where it does not.
What this calculator does not count
- Shipping supplies. Team bags, bubble mailers and the card stock used as a sandwich are a per-sale cost, not a storage cost. They belong to the shipping calculator, where they sit alongside the postage and the expected loss they exist to prevent.
- Graded slabs. A slab is its own holder and does not take a sleeve, a toploader or a normal box. If a meaningful share of a collection is graded, count those cards separately and price slab boxes on their own.
- Postage on the supplies themselves. Ordering four packs of sleeves at a time makes the delivery a large share of the bill. The per-card figure the tool reports assumes you bought enough at once for that to be noise.
- Insurance. Supplies stop scratches and bends; they do nothing about fire, water or theft. What a household policy actually pays on a collection is usually much less than its owner assumes, and the insurance gap calculator is where that gets worked out.
Bottom line
Protecting a collection is cheap at the base level and expensive at the top, and the gap between the two is the only decision worth thinking about. Every card gets a soft sleeve first, always, because the sleeve is the sacrificial layer between a printed surface and a holder that is harder than it is. At the starting prices recorded on 2026-09-11, sleeving and boxing 1,000 cards costs $0.021 a card; putting all of them in toploaders costs $0.215 a card; putting all of them in magnetic holders costs $1.765 a card. There is no volume discount in the rigid tier, so the total scales directly with the share you protect, and on a box of commons from a high-supply era the supplies cost more than the cards do. Sort first, protect the cards with a reason, store the rest upright in a filled box in a room whose humidity does not swing, and keep everything out of direct light.

Do I need to sleeve every card?
Every card that you would be annoyed to damage, which for most collections is a small fraction of the total. A penny sleeve is the cheapest protection in the hobby by an enormous margin, so the honest rule is that sleeving is close to free and everything after it is not. The calculator on this page puts one sleeve on every card by default for exactly that reason, and then asks you how many of them go on to a toploader or a magnetic holder, because that is where the money starts.
Does a toploader need a sleeve inside it?
Yes, and the reason is mechanical rather than fussy. Rigid PVC or polypropylene is harder than the card’s surface coating, so a card slid in and out of a bare toploader picks up fine scratches every time, and surface is one of the four sub-grades a grading company assigns. The sleeve is the sacrificial layer that takes the friction. Loading a toploader without one is the most common self-inflicted condition loss in the hobby.
What is the difference between a toploader and a magnetic holder?
A toploader is a cheap rigid sheath that is open at one end and holds a sleeved card by friction. A magnetic holder, often called a one-touch, is a two-piece acrylic case that closes on a magnet, is UV-resistant in most versions, and displays the card properly from both sides. The practical difference is cost: at the starting prices on this page a magnetic holder is several times the price of a toploader, which is why the share of a collection that goes into them is the input that moves the total.
How many cards fit in a storage box?
The figure printed on a box is measured in unsleeved cards, and sleeves take up real room. A box sold as holding 800 cards holds noticeably fewer once every card is in a penny sleeve, and fewer again if some are in toploaders, which is why the cards-per-box field in the calculator is editable. Underfilling is also a cost: a half-empty box lets cards lean, and a leaning card develops a bend over months that no honest process removes.
What humidity should cards be stored at?
Moderate and stable beats any particular number, because cardboard absorbs and releases moisture and it is the movement that warps a card rather than the level. A card that sits at a steady middling humidity for ten years is fine; a card that cycles between a damp winter and a dry summer in a loft is not. An interior cupboard in a heated room outperforms a garage, a loft and a basement for this one reason, before anything is spent on supplies at all.
Are cheap sleeves and toploaders worse?
The material matters more than the brand. Soft sleeves should be acid-free polypropylene rather than PVC, because plasticised PVC can leach over years and leave a card tacky or clouded, and that damage is permanent. Beyond that, the difference between a budget toploader and a premium one is mostly fit and clarity. Buying in bulk changes every price on this page by a factor of two or more, which is why the calculator reports the per-card figure instead of a total you could not reproduce.
Is it worth protecting bulk commons at all?
Usually not beyond a box. Work it out with the numbers on this page: at the starting prices, sleeving and boxing three thousand commons costs a little under sixty dollars, and putting the same three thousand cards in toploaders costs several hundred. The cards themselves, if they are commons from a high-supply era, are worth close to nothing. Spending more on the protection than the contents are worth is a decision people make by default rather than on purpose.

Supplies are repriced constantly and bulk pricing moves all four by a factor of two or more, so a calculator that hid its assumptions would be confidently wrong within a season.
